[Joseph Smith] Mr. Caldwell, who took the Saints' plea for help to the governor, returns with the governor's reply that because the quarrel is between the mob and the Mormons, they might "fight it out" on their own. Captain Samuel Bogart, a former mobber, is placed in control of the militia forces. Several of the Saints start to fight back against the mob.
