[William Clayton Journal] The greatest danger that now threatens us is dissensions and strifes amongst the Church. There are already 4 or 5 men pointed out as successors to the Trustee and President, and there is danger of feelings being manifest. All the brethren who stand at the head seem to feel the delicacy of the business. [W. W.] Phelps and Dr. [Willard] Richards have taken a private course and are carrying out many measures on their own reponsibility without council.

There was only one true successor to Joseph Smith in the Church Presidency, and that was his 1st Counselor Sidney Rigdon. And when Rigdon fell in 1847, he was succeeded by William Bickerton in 1852-1862. Bickerton was baptized into Rigdon's organization (established Apr.6, 1845; disintegrated - 1847) in June 1845. He was then ordained an elder and then into the quorum of 70 evangelists, both sometime later in 1845. That organization continues unbroken today in The Church of Jesus Christ (WHQ: Monongahela, Pennsylvania). Its faith and doctrine is based exclusively on the KJV Bible and the Book of Mormon and only the revelations of God that are consistent and in harmony with these 2 books.
